Solution for Today's Cluely, Feb-11-2025, #20

Solution, notes, and explanations

Theme: "... Giant Leap for Mankind"

On July-21st, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first man to walk on the surface of the moon. To celebrate, we dedicate this Cluely to the Apollo 11 mission.

Clues

  • Eagle - The name of the lunar landing module. The name of the main module was Columbia.
  • BL - Bruce Lee initials. Martial arts master with movie star fame.
  • EE - Electrical Engineering.
  • EF - D-sharp is also E-flat.
  • FE - Rust is oxidation of iron. Iron symbol is FE.
  • HEN - Indeed, a female lobster is called a hen. There, you learned something new!

Levels
  • New moon.
  • Waxing crescent
  • First Quarter
  • Waxing gibbous
  • Full moon!
How hard was it?
Seems like this was doable, even though there were quite a few proper nouns. Most of them are well known, or otherwise had other clues helping along. We'll give it a  Half Marathon last preparation run .

'till the next one,
 Zachi (waddling along).

Solution for Today's Cluely, Feb-04-2025, #19

Solution, notes, and explanations

Theme: Cars

Love them, hate them, use them (or not): Cars are everywhere. And you can't escape but admire the effort invested in their design, their esthetics. And the brandnames. And the logos.
And logos is what this cluely is all about.

Clues

  • RLS - "Treasure Island" was written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson. He also authored "Strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde", and many others.  This is one of those cases that I wished for more space to write the clue within. I thought of  '"Treasure Island" au.' as a clue, or 'John Long Silver's creator', or something with Jekyll and Hyde. but all were too long. Alas. This will be resolved in Cluely2. Stay tuned (planned release in March 4, 2025).

Levels
  • "Cars" (the movie) - Walt  Disney animation.
  • Formula 1 - Real race car circuit
  • 007 - James Bond can be relied upon to have a new car from Q.
  • "Back to the future" - The classic Time machine is a vehicle!
  • "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" - Flying car a'la Walt Disney.

How hard was it?
Seems like this was doable but easy for many. What really helped were the many cross-referenced clues. And friends who love cars.  We'll give it a  Half Marathon training run .

'till the next one,
 Zachi (waddling along).

Solution for Today's Cluely, Jan-28-2025, #18

Solution, notes, and explanations

Theme: Seven Wonders of the New World

In 2007, after a process of 7 years polling, the list was compiled. I am sure there are people who will want to add more places, but you do have to admit these are remarkable.
How many have you visited?

Clues

  • Uz - The Book of Job opens with "[1] There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil."
  • Neap - Neap tide is after the first or third quarter of the moon, and it has the smallest difference between high and low tides.

Levels
  • Local
  • Traveler
  • World Traveler
  • Explorer
  • Marco Polo

How hard was it?
Seems like the parts around the ESP, NEAP (tide), and ANONYM were a little hard for many. Also UZ was unfamiliar to many, but you could get the U from AUM. We'll give it a  10K Race .

'till the next one,
 Zachi (waddling along).

Solution for Today's Cluely, Jan-21-2025, #17

Solution, notes, and explanations

Theme: Baby Animals

Who can resist a baby animal? Some have special names, so let's see how many we get right.

Clues

  • Cygnet - Turns out this was the hardest, partially because of the spelling. Many tried 'S'.
  • EOL - It's a little obscure reference, but Line-Feed + Carriage-Return are the ASCII symbols used to end a line, which is also called EOL. If you move files around from Mac to PC, or in and out of excel sheets, you've seen these many times.
  • H and O - Water has two atoms of H and one of O.

Levels
  • Egg
  • Larve
  • Pupa
  • Adult
  • Monarch Butterfly

How hard was it?
Woeful was a little hard for some to get. Maybe because SEK (Swedish Krona) was hard as well. We'll give it a  5K Race .

'till the next one,
 Zachi (waddling along).

Solution for Today's Cluely, Jan-16-2025, #16

Solution, notes, and explanations

Theme: Flags of the world!

We had this a theme already, but there are so many flag still to cover.

Clues

  • Logo of GE is, well, not a flag.

Levels
  •      ðŸ‡±ðŸ‡·(Liberia, 1 star)
  •       🇰🇳(Saint Kitts, 2 stars)
  •       🇭🇳(Honduras, 5 stars)
  •       🇺🇸(USA, 50 stars)
  •       Vexillologist (Scholar of flags)

How hard was it?
Overall, it was mostly about the theme (and some greek letters). But flags can be tricky. We'll give it a  10K Jog .

'till the next one,
 Zachi (waddling along).

Levels
  • Gisele Bündchen
  • Paulo Coelho
  • Ayrton Senna
  • Pelé

How hard was it?
You did need to know how a Toucan look like, and recognize Sao-Paulo. Neither is trivial. We'll give it a  5K race.

'till the next one,
 Zachi (waddling along).

'till the next one,
 Zachi (waddling along).
